You Could be Saving Money on Your Taxes
File Your Homestead Exemption
Buying the home was just the first step. Making sure you're taking advantage of every homeowner benefit available to you is part of how we continue to serve our clients after closing.
If your home is your primary residence, filing a homestead exemption can lower your property taxes and help prevent unnecessary increases in your monthly mortgage payment.
For example: on a $500,000 home in Dallas County, the current Texas homestead exemption may reduce the taxable value by up to $140,000 for school taxes alone. That means you may be taxed more like your home is worth $360,000 instead of $500,000 for that portion of your tax bill.
And if you forgot to file last year, you may not be too late.
Texas homeowners can generally file retroactively for up to two years and may receive refunds on overpaid property taxes.
You can check your exemption status here (see instructions below - it’s so simple!):
https://www.dallascad.org/SearchAddr.aspx
Input your address and search
Click the blue link of your address to get to the next screen
From there, it will show your status and even give you the link to file a Homestead Exemption if needed
If you live outside Dallas County, you can find your county appraisal district here:
https://comptroller.texas.gov/taxes/property-tax/county-directory/
People are always so surprised when I tell them this...but the appraisal offices are actually so nice! If you have any questions at all, they are typically beyond helpful.
